Seth studied the man across from him.  “She’s very special to me, George.”

“I know that, Seth.  I can see it in the way you take care of her.”  George studied the man.  “What is it?  Are you afraid I’ll take her away?”

“No.”  Seth shook his head.  “I know you won’t take her away because I know how much Jessie loves Cabot Cove.”

“You’re right.  Even if I were to want to take her away, she’d say no…she already has.”

Seth was a bit shocked.  “You actually asked her?”

“Of course I did.”  George sighed.  “Seth, I love the woman.  I want to spend the rest of my life with her, not just be a friend who visits from time to time and takes vacations with her.  I want to marry her, but that’s not what she wants.”

A’yuh.”  Seth nodded.  “I coulda told you that.”

“Is it something the two of you have discussed?”  George asked trying not to sound jealous.

Seth laughed loudly.  “Are you crazy, man?”  He shook his head.  “She’s nothing more than a friend, George.  Always has been.  I made a promise to her Frank to take care of her.”

“Sorry, Seth.”

“Nonsense, George.  I’ve felt the same about you.”

“So you are in love with her.”  It wasn’t a question, just a confirmation of something George had always suspected from the first moment he’d met Seth Hazlitt.

“Yes, George.  Have been for a long time, but Jessie doesn’t see me like that.  She only has eyes for one tall, green-eyed Inspector from across the pond.”

George smiled at Seth’s description of him.  “I’m sorry, Seth.”

“Don’t be.  She doesn’t know how I feel, and I’ve worked very hard to keep her from ever learning the truth.  I don’t want to lose my best friend.”

“I won’t tell her, but tell me Seth … how did you know how she feels about me?  She told me she hadn’t told you.”

Seth smiled.  “Those big blue eyes of hers, George…haven’t you learned by now that they’re the windows to her soul?”
